About Me

Liz Baker, PhD

Like many of you, I dreamed of quitting my day job and retiring forever. But alas, I don’t have enough saved. So, I started researching Financial Planning in earnest, to answer the big questions:

  • How much do I need to save?
  • How do I invest this savings to grow it to the required size?
  • Once I stop working, how do I make this nest egg last long enough for me to make it to the proverbial exit?

Absolutely none of these topics were reviewed when I was in school. I was lucky I had parents that advocated both saving and investing, but even they were self-taught.

My parents lived off a work pension and social security. They had savings, but they didn’t need it.

My generation and all those that come after are in a completely different predicament. Pensions have been replaced with 401K Plans. It’s now completely on us to save enough for our financial goals, including retirement.

Too many of us won’t make it. . .

We need to be armed with knowledge. And we need that knowledge early, in our twenties (and arguably as early as our teens) when we’re just starting out earning income.

I started my career as a research scientist with a Ph.D. in Biology, so I’m no stranger to exploration. I’ve since traded in test-tubes and pipettes for digging into facts. And doing the math. Lots of math.

I’ve spent almost two decades working in the Pharmaceutical industry (managing my 401K and doing my own taxes) while specializing in medical communication and training. I’m adept at translating complicated concepts into simple language.

Fortunately, personal finance is easier than medicine.

I’ve even earned a degree in Personal Financial Planning.

This blog represents a compilation of all the knowledge I wish I had ten or twenty years ago. Heck, even things I wish I knew last year!

Armed with knowledge, we can make better decisions about our personal finances and have a shot at achieving our financial goals.

Good luck!
